Living in our pluralistic and democratic society, it is nearly impossible for us to understand the radical nature of the words Paul uses to describe our unity in Christ. Gentiles, slaves, and women were looked down upon with considerable scorn by many Jewish men. For Paul to say that Christ shatters these differences is to say something quite radical.
We still struggle with this concept of being "one in Christ Jesus." Women have great difficulty gaining access to the pulpits of the Christian church. Third-world people are often written off because of their powerlessness. And people of differing confessions of faith are pigeonholed, prejudged, and ignored.
In the name of the One who has shattered all distinctions, we still erect monumental walls so we might maintain or promote our status.
