You've heard of "foot in mouth disease?" One of the most celebrated cases of this malady is presented in our lesson for the day. The learned, excelled, pompous Pilate encounters the Christ in dialogue. However, when the conversation ends, Pilate is put on the defensive and concludes the conversation with the classical question, "What is truth?"
This is the desperation that a football team feels when it is the fourth down and they have half the field to traverse before they can get a touch down. The admonition comes from the coach, "When all else fails, PUNT!"
Pilate punts alright. Only his foot misses the ball and lands squarely in his mouth. A foot is often a lot harder to swallow than the truth that is before us.
I have discovered that in many a counseling situation instead of accepting the plain truth of the situation, more questions are sought, more confusion is invested. The answer just can't be simple! Pilate encountered the truth, but didn't recognize it. Jesus as truth was just too simple.
