Some years ago a large American city named for brotherly love had the reputation of being corrupt: all the way from the chairman of the City Council down to many ward politicians, from the Mayor to many of the policemen. Thousands of people had to "pay for protection"; others had to pay extra if they wanted a building permit or inspection. Prostitution was openly permitted in sections of the city.
But they did not reckon with Rev. Dan Poling, editor of Christian Herald magazine in those days. He had the support of clergymen, educators, and highminded citizens who wanted a change. Dan ran for Mayor, and campaigned that there would be a cleanup of the city.
No, Dan Poling was not elected; but his effort brought a cleanup of the city administration, which is what he wanted.
Through history it has been evident that we cannot desecrate the God-approved institutions of society and not suffer the consequences. Let us not forget Rome fell because of corruption. Must the forces of righteousness cleanse the temple again and again?
