One of the great photographs of the Civil War shows Abraham Lincoln reviewing the troops. He is dressed in a black suit, wearing a stovepipe hat and is seated upon what looks like a donkey. Lincoln's tall frame seems unsuited for such a small beast. His feet almost touch the ground. How unseemly for a Commander-in-Chief to present such a ludicrous image!
But then we are gripped by the pathos of the moment. Here is a leader who knew victory would be his, yet he was a man of sorrows who hated war and knew the price yet to be paid by the lads who stood at attention before him. Also, there was an uncertain future that awaited him as he struggled to maintain union in the face of those who cried for conquest.
This is not unlike our Lord's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He was out of place in a victory parade which he knew was necessary, if only to remind his followers in some later day that grace and salvation come through a wound, and humility is learned at the foot of a cross.
