On local television in the Louisville area we have a reporter sporting a green thumb who bills himself as the "Weekend Gardener."
We often think of God as a weekend gardener: sitting through sermons, some of which are dry as the Sahara after a drought; confined to a stained glassed playpen of platitudes and piety bearing no resemblance to the real world of the Monday-through-Saturday struggle and strife.
Jeremiah would not tolerate such a concept of the God of the universe! His God would bring the captives home. His God would cause maidens to dance and men to leap in joyful adoration. His God would be a faithful shepherd to Zion's flock. His God would comfort the mourning, giving them the oil of gladness and the balm of beatitude instead of the dry bread of despair. His God would each day water with his compassionate care the parched souls of his people.
Jeremiah's God was as big as the universe and as tiny as a Bethlehem babe whose cry of liberation rings in echo against the rafters of the universe. A tiny Christmas babe confined in a cradle would one day embrace the world in love. The Garden of Eden world of sin would be redeemed in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Christmas is a big day as we celebrate the birthday of a big God who loves each of us. Welcome the Christ Child this day in your heart!
