Look, Teacher, what large stones...

"Look, Teacher, what large stones and what great buildings!" enthused Jesus' disciples
over the Jerusalem temple. The temple started by Herod the Great was indeed a marvel.
Some of its foundation stones are so huge modern engineers still haven't figured out
exactly how the ancients moved them in place. The temple covered 35 acres. Jesus asked,
"Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will
be thrown down." His prophesy came true in 70 C.E., when Titus burned the temple.
Today all that's left is the Wailing Wall. In every generation, believers need to guard
against an "edifice complex." Religion is more than buildings -- more even the greatest
temple!
