God's call often reaches us through an expressed need. It is important that the best person is chosen for particular tasks.
The United Methodist Church examines several candidates each year. It is painful for those who are rejected as candidates for the ordained ministry, although they may serve in other ministries of the church. The examiners, however, are charged with an awesome task -- to secure for the church those men and women who are fit for ministry. That is, those who are psychologically sound, socially responsible, personally committed, spiritually gifted, and theologically articulate. The task is complex and intense.
Those charged with this awesome task find it gratifying when they successfully select those candidates who are not only fit for ministry, but who also fulfill the promise for ministry. These persons witness a life-changing encounter with Christ and commit themselves to life work in faithful service -- preaching and teaching the Word, baptizing believers, administering the sacraments, and being present for the church and community in all religious matters. May we continue to pray and look for those whom the Lord has chosen
