A Los Angeles nightclub was taken to court for violating the civil rights of some of its would-be customers. The nightclub, called Vertigo, had doormen posted at its entrances to ensure that only people fashionable enough would be admitted. The court ruled that the civil rights of those people who had been excluded from the nightclub definitely had been violated. Fashion and social acceptability, ruled the court, cannot be criteria for admission. But if that same lawsuit were brought against the church, how would we fare? Are we prepared to welcome all those whom God would have us welcome? -- Bowen
