Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) is internationally recognized as one of the great forces of the Art Nouveau style, as well as for his major contributions to the art of glassmaking. In 1878, Tiffany established his own glassmaking factory at Cirona, New York, and from there his artistic contributions are legendary. Using subtle colors and the play of light upon stained glass, Tiffany created a spectacularly stunning church window which he titled "The New Jerusalem." The eye of the beholder of this work sweeps from dark green and blue waters and plants, up through lush palms and over verdant river valleys to a blue and gold sky. In the midst of the heavens is an extraordinary gold and white domed city, only partially obscured by clouds which a breath of wind seems to be driving aside. The more one studies this work of art, the more it is appreciated for its beauty. Perhaps that is why an upstate New York museum has commissioned a contemporary work from the original, for sale to the general public. Something so glorious, so beautiful, so irenic, is simply not to be kept to a selected few. -- Saxon
