To love someone is to...

To love someone is to know them. A seminarian once told a professor that he really loved him. The professor looked up from his desk and asked the seminarian; "If you love me, tell me what causes me pain." The seminarian looked puzzled at the professor as he searched his mind for an answer. After an awkward moment of silence, the professor said that if the seminarian could not define the cause of pain, then it was impossible to love.
To love a person is to know them. If you don't know where a person hurts, how can you love them? If you don't know where another person experiences joy, how can you love him? A husband can't love his wife if he does not know what causes anxiety in her. A child can't love a parent if the child doesn't know what makes the parent worry.
To love a person is to know them. Notice how the Bible tells us that Jesus knows us. Notice how we are told that Jesus knows our names, our habits, our hurts, and our joys. Notice that Jesus is the Good Shepherd because he knows us: To love us is to know us.
