Loving one another includes loving...

Loving one another includes loving our enemies. It can even lead us to do some things that, in retrospect, seem a little bizarre.
When W. Averell Harriman was U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union, he was shadowed everywhere he went by Soviet secret police. One weekend he was invited to travel outside Moscow to visit a British diplomat at his country retreat. The house was accessible only by means of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a fact Harriman considerately passed along to the agents shadowing him.
Nonetheless, setting out in mid-winter, the police followed his uncomfortably chilly jeep in their cozy heated sedan, which soon became hopelessly bogged down. A resolute operative set off doggedly on foot, and the ambassador's jeep slowed down to allow him to keep up. Harriman, concerned that the policeman would freeze to death before they reached their destination, offered him a ride. He promised he would tell no one about the incident.
The man accepted, and ambassador and policeman rode together for the rest of the journey.
