Rube Goldberg contraptions were a humorous portrayal in cartoon form of humankind's search for an easier way to do something. We want to get away from inhuman forms of labor and are willing to devise ways to alleviate it. But this does not mean the time will come when we do not have hard work to do. The industrial revolution freed man from slavery in labor only to create a whole new category of problems, plus further unrest among the rank and file laboring classes in society.
Redemption comes in any case through sacrificial service; and as Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned us, there is no solution in "cheap grace." Christ's Labor and Sacrifice were a tremendous price for our souls. We can hardly expect anything of value will come any other way.
Christ on the cross is represented symbolically in the scene in Numbers 21. The serpent lifted up in the wilderness where all could see it symbolized the evil that had beset the people. By faith we are saved, whether at the cross or in a wilderness.
