The story of a potential sacrifice of a child still causes a feeling of horror and disgust regardless of the "faith test" issue within the story. Yet such a scene is played out in homes all of us may know. Children may be tied up in knots; literally bound by a parent's attitudes, prejudices, anger or abuse. In an excellent book by Dennis Benson and Stan Stewart, The Ministry of the Child (Nashville: Abingdon, 1978), they tell of street-toughened pre-teens in Pittsburgh. The children relate their stories of home life. Feelings of guilt and responsibility for divorce are beneath the facades of toughness. Shall the children continue to be sacrificed? God loudly pronounced, "No," in this story. Save the children Intervention by a church's ministries with youth, relationships with pastors and concerned adults are a real need today.
