Seven persons died and thirty-four injured in Chicago when poisonous fumes seeped through a leather company. The fumes were created when a truck driver mistakenly pumped sodium sulphydrate, used in the leather tanning process, into a basement tank containing chromium liquid, a substance also used in tanning. The chemical reaction produced clouds of hydrogen sulfide, a vicious killer gas.
The sin in our nature is deadly, and when we allow it to drive us to sinful acts, the results are worse still. Sin destroys our true character, separates us from God, puts us under God's judgment, and threatens us with eternal death in the world to come. If we continue to inhale its fumes, we are doomed.
It takes a mighty force to neutralize and knock out this vicious killer. God has supplied this saving power in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ, who "has appeared once and for all to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself." To receive Christ into your life and to draw upon his Spirit is to disperse the fumes of sin and to inhale the invigorating, life-giving grace and forgiveness of God.
