Several years ago our congregation enrolled in a program to train lay assistants for a teaching mmistry through the parish. As pastor I was first involved in a training seminar to prepare me to teach those who would be the teachers. At the seminar we were all advised to follow this plan: Describe and advertise the lay ministry for a few weeks, so everyone will have his/her chance to say no to it. Expect no one to volunteer, because requirements will deter all aspirants.
At home we followed that design, with one addition. As I discussed the directive with a couple members, one strongly urged me to include this call for volunteers in our weekly prayers during worship as well as to encourage worshipers to pray about this need during the week. He pointed out that we entered this venture in faith, trusting God to enable us to find the dollar resources to fund it (which came almost without effort) and to make it work as a ministry. So, he said, we should continue in faith, trusting God to keep his word of promise.
After a month of advertisement and prayer, we had thirteen volunteers!
