A man who lost his eyesight when a booby-trapped shell he was trying to defuse blew up in his face near Saigon in 1971 is now making a living in his own woodworking shop in a small town in central Illinois. Of his work, he says, "Everything is done by perception. I know by touch whether I've done a good job or not. And then I see the finished product in my mind's eye." He has made a grandfather clock and also coffee tables, bread boxes, canister sets, jewelry boxes, and other wooden articles. "My world is as normal to me now," he says "as your world is to you if you see. I do the best with what I've got -- just like anybody else. I intend to be my own man and make the best of my life."
Will power and determination can carry a person a long way in spite of obstacles and handicaps. Yet the story of Jesus' healing of the blind man reminds us that from inside each one of us there comes a cry for deliverance from whatever ills we suffer and whatever burdens we bear, and that Jesus has come to re-establish God's perfect design in the face of a sin-disordered creation. Faith in him as Savior holds for us the promise that in him we shall be part of a future where all things will be made new.
