On a steamy Sunday morning the preacher climbed the long set of steps to the pulpit and with a wipe of his brow began, "Friends, this mornin' we're gonna' make this church run! We're gonna' make it run!" At that a voice rang out from the back of the church, "Make it run, Rev, make it run!" The preacher continued, "But friends, before the church can run, it first has to learn to crawl. So first we're gonna' make this church crawl." The voice in the back again, this time a big more strongly, "Make it crawl, Rev, make it crawl!" "And friends, after this church can crawl, we're gonna' teach it how to stand -- we're gonna' make it stand!" More loudly yet, "Make it stand, Rev, make it stand!" "And when we stand, we're gonna' walk! This church is gonna walk!" With more volume yet, "Make it walk, Rev, make it walk!" "And friends, when this church can crawl and stand and walk, then, friends, we're gonna' teach this church to run! And it's gonna run!" By now the echo was at peak power: "Make it run, Rev, make it run!" "And my friends, if this church is gonna' crawl and then stand and then walk, and if this church is gonna' run
-- friends, it's gonna' take money!" Returning to a barely audible whisper came the rear voice, "Let it crawl, Rev, let it crawl."
