Our text speaks of the Incarnation with phrases like "he -- partook of the same nature" (as us) and "he had to be made like his brethren (us) in every respect." (James 2:14 & 17). What a powerful answer to those moments when God seems far-away or unreal, capricious, inscrutable, or even cruel! God has participated in our human experiences! He lived life on our human terms in Jesus Christ. A wonderful example comes from the life of the great preacher Ernest Freemont Tittle. He showed up unannounced one Christmas morning at a parish home saddened by the loss of a father and husband. His arms were full of toys and candy. He said to the young widow, "I thought your boys might miss their father on Christmas morning." Dr. Tittle is then reported to have spent the next two hours playing with the boys and their new toys.
That's what God did for us in Jesus. He humbled himself to come to the place where we live. He willingly shared in the joys and pains of our existence. Because he did, we know he cares and understands. We can always approach him in that confidence.
