The main road from Exeter...
Illustration
The main road from Exeter to Plymouth winds along the seacoast, with villages below and farmlands and the heights of Dartmoor above. The route is one of the busiest highways in England's West country. Some years ago, an elderly farmer from the high country set out on his weekly shopping trip to one of the villages on the coast. Arriving at the highway, he drove directly into the traffic without stopping, causing two people's deaths. Amazingly, the farmer survived. When questioned by police as to why he had not stopped, he replied that he had driven that same route for over 50 years, and no one had ever been coming along the highway. It was not necessary to stop, for he believed with all his heart that it was safe to proceed. -- Walker
