A man and his wife...

A man and his wife were awakened in the middle of the night by a little girl climbing into their bed. When the man inquired of his daughter why she wasn't sleeping in her own bed, she replied, "Because I'm afraid!" And what had frightened her? A terrible thunderstorm. In our text for today we find Jesus speaking about fear. And what is the cause of this fear? In the verses leading up to our text we see Jesus sending his disciples out into the world to proclaim the Good News. Before sending them out he warns them that opposition would arise. He spoke of floggings, court trials, family conflicts and even death. And if the disciples were going to encounter such opposition, how can they not be afraid? Jesus reminds them that there are two kinds of fear. One is the fear of what might happen if they speak up. The other is the fear of what might happen if they didn't. Jesus says, "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." But our reason for witnessing is not because of fear of God. It is because we love God and we want to share this love with others. And the disciples can witness without fear because they know that this God of love is watching over them. God sees all. God sees even a sparrow fall. God counts the hair on a person's head. God will provide for the disciples. God will provide for us. As I once overheard one person say, "I am not afraid to witness because I know that God will help me to say and to do the right thing." -- Frank
