In many communist countries today, gifted young people are identified early, then
streamed into programs that will enhance and develop their gifts. These youngsters get
perks that their fellow citizens do not get, such as quality education, access to topnotch
labs, gymnasiums, musical instruments. The young person is told which sport, science, or
musical instrument they will pursue. As Cuban defector, Juan Carlos Gomez, said in a
recent interview, "They chose it for me in Cuba. I wanted to become a baseball player.
That was always my dream. But, you know, in Cuba you are not allowed to make your
own decisions." If the young musician, athlete, or scientist stagnates along the way, they
are quickly dropped from the program. As adults, these gifted individuals not only
represent their country in competitions, their perks continue: better housing, automobiles,
and money.
Jeremiah was also identified early -- in the womb, in fact. He was given little choice as to his vocation: announce the Word of the Lord. And the perks? Rejection and tears.
