Many folks remember Ron Howard as Opie, the towheaded son of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the classic television comedy The Andy Griffith Show. Today, though, Howard is a famous director of fine Hollywood films. In his Apollo 13 movie the audience breathes a collective sign of relief and joy when the astronauts are rescued from the space capsule floating in the ocean. When the astronauts in the jinxed flight were rescued, they knew they were safe and sound.
We Christians live in a world which, as Shakespeare put it in the mouth of Prince Hamlet, subjects us to "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." We never know when we leave the driveway in the morning whether or not we shall return safely. Life is hazardous but the truth is we can never take a day off from living. As we go through the adventure of our lives, we need to be well led if we are to be led to a safe harbor at journey's end.
Paul reminds us all that Jesus is the Suffering Servant who poured out his life upon the altar of sacrifice at Calvary's cross, so we might live with him safe in heaven. As Christians we are to confess that Jesus is the Lord of our Lives.
As we seek to bow in obedience to the Lordship of Jesus we need to follow the Master as servants to others. Life will always be perilous and uncertain, but when we confess Christ as Lord we can be confident that we are supported by the everlasting arms of a loving Lord.
