Many men in the United States remember a time when the military draft was in full swing and there was a fear in opening any letter that came from the U.S. government. If the opening words started with "Greetings ..." it was usually bad news. Their lives were about to change drastically and there was very little they could do about it. Many tried, however to get out of the draft: frantic calls to their congressional representative; enlisting in another branch of the military; fleeing to Canada; or other innovative ways were all tried. But the call was almost irrevocable.
