Many retirees hold younger welfare...

Many retirees hold younger welfare recipients in contempt, because they are receiving benefits that they have not earned. But when we consider what we deserve, we should consider the fact that the average person who has been retired and has been collecting Social Security for four or five years has already received back every dollar that he ever paid into the system. From that point five years into retirement and beyond, the average person is receiving benefits that he never paid for.
On the other hand, those who are in the earlier stages of their working lives are already being told by the government that when they retire, the average person will only receive back a fraction of what he has paid into the system. Do older adults still deserve those checks, knowing that same benefit will not be available to those who come after them?
Paul realizes that Philemon has every right to treat Onesimus harshly for running away. Yet Paul asks for kindness, as he reminds Philemon of how God does not mete out punishment to us in proportion to what we deserve.
