Many years ago there was an Easter Day episode in the comic strip called Graves, Inc. Mr. Balding, the junior executive is visiting his bearded psychiatrist. Lying on the couch, he says, "I feel really useless -- as if I have no control over my life." The counselor says, "That's actually very realistic. You're just a character in a comic strip." Now, comic strip characters aren't supposed to be aware that they are characters in a comic strip, so Balding looks like he obviously doesn't understand this, and says, "What do you mean by that?" The doctor says, "I mean you are put here by someone higher up, and whatever problems you have, or don't have, are his, and how they get worked out, too." The doctor is obviously excited about this. Balding thinks a minute and says, "I'm beginning to feel better already." The shrink shouts exuberantly, "That's him! That's him doing it!" -- Mosley
