Margaret Walker won a literary fellowship award for her novel Jubilee. The story is about Vyry, who survived slavery, the Civil War and its aftermath. In spite of all that Vyry had suffered, she had a remarkable love for everyone, and she vowed that she would preach the same to her children. Alex Haley's Roots picked up also on the dreadful institution of slavery to trace how one family survived and made it up from slavery. Haley's work helped the nation to contemplate the fact that we are barely more than 100 years away from the practice of slavery in our nation. Slavery thrived on this continent for almost 250 years. Since the abolition of slavery we have not dealt all that well with the social problems that resulted from slavery. We also know that subtle forms of slavery continue to exist in the society in all kinds of institutions as domineering groups take advantage of others who may be passive or docile. Paul's letter to Philemon did not address the institution of slavery as such. However, he did offer a model for relationships that annihilates the barriers that social institutions often create.
