Margueritte Harmon Bro gave us an example of how truth is sometimes a burden too great for people to bear. (Every Day a Prayer, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1943, p. 110.) A commission of medical doctors was sent from Europe to India. Authorities asked them to investigate an epidemic in India. They discovered that a single drop of water from the Ganges River contained numerous germs. The doctors tried to get a leading Hindu to help in eliminating the epidemic. They sought to convince him of the seriousness of the difficulty they faced. They set up a microscope so they could show him a drop of the polluted water. The Brahman looked through the microscope. Then, he said, "I will show you how to get rid of the germs." He picked up the microscope and smashed it on the rocks.
