The Marquis de Lafayette came...

The Marquis de Lafayette came to America from France to help the Continental Army in its fight for independence. General Washington was grateful for the assistance, and showed Lafayette much respect. At one point, Washington honored the French General with a password. In order to enter the army's headquarters, a visitor would have to give the password, "Paris."
Late one night, Lafayette was stopped by a sentry and asked for the countersign. Of course, Lafayette said, "Paris." But the sentry didn't recognize it as the correct password. Lafayette repeated himself, but the sentry called his corporal, who would have arrested the Frenchman, but an officer was called and, knowing a little about French, saved the situation.
Lafayette had naturally said the right password. He had said, "Paree."
