Martin Luther may in fact not have proclaimed to the Diet of Worms: "Here stand I: I can do no other." However, the saying captures something of the essence of what he did say: "Unless I am proved wrong by the Scriptures or by evident reason, then I am a prisoner in conscience to the Word of God. I cannot retract and I will not retract." A similar sentiment, arising in more peaceable times, is found in the beloved Shaker Hymn whose first verse ends with these words: No storm can wreck my inmost calm,
while to that rock I'm clinging.
It sounds an echo in my soul,
How can I keep from singing?
(Chadwick, Owen, The Reformation, Pelican Books, 1964, p. 56.) -- Walker
