Mary had been born able to see. A healthy and happy little girl, her mind absorbed more than the average child's. It was clear to those who met her that Mary had amazing promise. But at age four she got sick. Her fever rose and rose and the doctors could do little to combat the illness that was attacking her. When it was over, she had survived the virus but had lost her sight. Most people thought Mary's promise was over. But Mary's heart was not touched by the virus. Her love of life was still intact and she studied Braille, learned to function in new ways, and put her energy into doing what she could. As an adult she was able to go to work for forty years, working with her husband to help support them and the two children they raised. What amazed most people when they met Mary was her insight. Although her eyes could not see, her heart could see clearly. She had incredibly deep faith in Christ and never seemed to doubt that God loved her. No one could explain it, but everyone who was a Christian could see if: Mary's blindness did not keep her from seeing God and calling on Jesus to be her source of strength in life.
