Mary was upset by her pastor's sermon and confronted him about it on Monday morning. "You preached about repentance yesterday. You know that I have been a faithful member of this church for years. I've done more than anyone to keep this church moving forward. What do I have to repent of?"
"Mary, your work has been outstanding and very much appreciated. But wouldn't you agree that there are some in the congregation who need to hear John the Baptizer's warning?"
"Of course, but they've all heard it a hundred times before. I think you ought to give them something fresh and new, something to pique their interest and get them moving."
"Do you mean that the message should get them doing as much work in the church as you do? Or do you mean it should lead them closer to the Christ to whom John was pointing?"
Mary became quiet, the message of John perhaps finally sinking in.
