Mary's response to Gabriel, Behold...

Mary's response to Gabriel, "Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord," was costly. She would be pregnant out-of-wedlock; a very serious situation in the Hebrew society of her day. There was more than the risk of social disapproval. There was the risk that she could lose Joseph. Plus, if Joseph had rejected her and if the law was strictly followed, there was the possibility that Mary could even be put to death. The punishment for a woman breaking her engagement vows with another man, in certain circumstances, was death by stoning (see Deuteronomy 22:23-24).
Yet Mary goes forward on faith, not knowing where God would lead her, even though it might prove costly. Mary is a shining example of faithfulness. So, "Hail Mary, full of grace." She is indeed "most blessed among women." But any one of us is blessed and full of grace when we, like Mary, allow Jesus to be born in us.
