A mature Christian faith recognizes the necessity of interdependence far more than that of independence. Just as there is no tree without branches, so there is no Christian witness unless we commit ourselves to being Christ's branches, namely, his hands, his feet, his eyes and ears, and his voice.
Similarly, just as branches cannot thrive detached from the tree so we cannot be anything as Christians unless we are rooted in Christ. Someone has said that Christian endeavour without theological informing is shallow. "I am the vine; you are the branches." One cannot be anything without the other.
