In May of 1998, a Roman Catholic bishop in Guatemala was executed. For more than 35 years, there has been a civil war going on there, which has resulted in 150,000 deaths and the disappearance of 50,000. Basically the fight has been between the poor peasants who want to be treated fairly and the wealthy elite who want things to stay the way they are. Bishop Gerardi was one who spoke out on behalf of the poor, as he stood up and tried to protest the way that the army and government leaders were mistreating the masses of people. But when the bishop returned home one night, attackers were waiting for him, waiting to crush his face with a cement block.
