From May 29-31, 1934, church leaders from across Germany drafted a statement, which is known today as the Barmen Declaration. In that statement, the leaders affirmed their belief that Christians can have only one ultimate Lord, and that must be Jesus Christ. And when anyone or anything else tries to take that position, then Christians have a moral obligation to rebel.
The Barmen Declaration affirmed that Christians should normally support and obey their governments. But the Declaration went on to say that Christians must oppose any government that tries to take the place of God.
The Barmen Declaration reminds us that it is possible to be a Christian in any land. Just like the people of Jeremiah's day, we are called upon to be faithful where we are.
