In the metropolitan area where I live, I sense a growing weariness in doing good. It seems harder and harder to convince people not to give up doing what is right, from the governor of the state to the parishioner in the pew. After three decades of work for social justice, the times seem more unjust than ever. After three decades of working to revitalize our city, it is still sick unto death. After years and years of feeding and housing the homeless, homelessness is increasing. Among the workers, weariness abounds. It is a weariness born of hopelessness. It is a weariness compounded of living in a society which more and more seems to care less and less. It is a weariness which is deadly and deadening. It is a weariness which must somehow be lifted if we are to continue to work in the spirit of God.
