In the middle of the twentieth century, mainland China became officially Communist,
and Christian missionaries were ejected. People within and beyond China assumed the
Christian faith was doomed there. Yet, as the twentieth century waned and the Chinese
government began allowing foreigners to visit and slowly permitting their citizens more

Ash Wednesday helps us reflect upon the pattern of Jesus' death and resurrection that still operates in this world. Jesus suffered but was raised from the dead. Paul, the apostle, witnesses that the pattern of death and resurrection doesn't just describe Jesus' earthly life and ministry, but also the continuing experience of individual Christians and even of a church spread across half a continent. In China today, about 5 percent of the population is Christian.
