Midway through the semester, a group of college students decided that they wanted to go
to the local mall. Several said that they needed a break from their studies while others
claimed they needed specific items, a couple of the others just wanted to get out of the
dorm and go shopping.
The girls checked out the latest spring fashions and made some purchases. After an hour, the group headed to the food court. Again, this would be a nice break from college food. Each one went to a different food stand. The girls pulled two tables together so they could all sit together. As they were enjoying their meal and conversation, they noticed several young people walking through wearing bright red buttons "Get Smart -- Get Saved." Not wanting to talk to these people, they avoided all eye contact. After they passed, a couple of the girls began laughing. "Can you believe them?" Allison exclaimed mocking them. There was more laughter.
Mary was growing uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation. Finally, she told the others that she believed in Jesus Christ and did not think it was appropriate to laugh at someone who took their faith seriously. This was an opportunity for Mary to share her faith as the other girls listened. She explained how Jesus was making a difference in her life. She said when she first came to college she was afraid to admit her beliefs in Jesus but could not remain silent any longer. Some of the girls were receptive to what Mary told them.
The apostle Paul reminds us, "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
