Military boot camp is demanding. For six weeks new recruits are drilled, hounded, taught, and exercised. Strict adherence to rules is demanded, and any deviation is noticed and penalized, even for such seeming trivial things as how shoes are shined or how a bed is made.
The purpose of such rigorous training is simple: It trains soldiers to respond to commands without questioning them, it engenders solidarity among the ranks, and it builds physical stamina. These qualities might not seem so important in the relative safety of the homeland, but in combat situations they are vital. One needs to be in top physical shape to endure the rigors of battle. Trusting the members of your troop is essential, for often your life is in their hands. And instant obedience saves lives.
Boot camp trains soldiers for battle. The grace of God trains Christians for discipleship.
