Miss Fairy Chism was a missionary sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene and she served in Swaziland from the time she was a young woman until her retirement. She was always a guest in our home when on furlough, and her stories rang with the joy of her work and the love she held for her Swazi. Swaziland remained a British Territory during all the years Miss Chism served there. When Queen Elizabeth II had ascended the British throne, here plans included travel to various territories including Swaziland. Fairy Chism filled up with anticipation which carried her "... running out into the veldt and along the rivers ..." carrying the news to the natives. "The Queen is coming! The Queen is coming!" With great excitement she sang it out, and her alto voice, so full and strong, was heard both far and near. "The Queen is coming!" The response was great, Miss Chism told me. The Americans got out their best cameras. The British got out their best clothing and the Europeans got out their best recipes. So far as Fairy Chism was concerned, she felt a tender love for her Swaziland. They cleaned out their huts and straightened out their boats along the river. They refreshed their best memories, rehearsed their old traditions and taught the rites of graciousness to their youngsters. The Queen is coming! The Queen was coming! Indeed, and the Queen honored the Swazi in that community by pinning a ribbon on their beloved Fairy Chism. -- Hoornstra
