Last year a new family came to our church. The young wife was severely crippled with multiple sclerosis. I was embarrassed to watch her struggle up the steps to the sanctuary, especially since 1981 was the International Year of the Disabled Person, and our church building was not accessible to the handicapped.
In May they were received as members of the church during morning worship. She could have walked forward and stood with great difficulty. We decided that she should come in her wheelchair. She would not only be more comfortable, but also this was a social statement the congregation needed to see and hear.
There are exiles in our midst who want to walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble They are the blind and the lame and those in travail. But the church which promises the good news is often bad news to the physically afflicted. What should be a land of return turns into a land of deep darkness.
Our new members helped us see the light. We begin this new year with ramp access, wheelchair space, and a new understanding that God's promises are for all his children.
