Moderns have a difficult time...
Moderns have a difficult time appreciating the ancient custom requiring the oldest daughter to be married before the second may be wed. The English statesman, Sir Thomas More, may have had this incident from Genesis in mind when he was looking for a wife. A certain John Colte had three unmarried daughters. The second seemed most appealing to More, but he realized it would probably be an affront to the older girl and her family should he ask for the middle child. So he married the oldest. She made him an excellent wife and their happy marriage was blessed with four children.
