The Mosaic law clearly states that "anyone hung on a tree is under God's curse" (Deuteronomy 21:23). No wonder Paul had to urge Timothy not to be ashamed of the testimony about Christ! As George Buttrick said of the crucifixion of Jesus, it is "the worst discord the world has ever known." Crosses today often grace beautiful sanctuaries, soaring spires, and even lovely necklaces. Artists often depict the cross of Jesus as placed triumphantly on a high hill. But crucifixions in Jerusalem normally took place near the city gate, alongside the Damascus Road, where passersby would view the wretched and dying bodies. For many, the idea that God's Messiah would be executed, especially by shameful crucifixion, was unscriptural and unthinkable.
