Moses must have rejoiced to hear that the power of God moved among the elders and that they prophesied. Having complained to God, in verse 11, of the tremendous burden of the people that he singularly bore, this answered prayer was an encouragement, a blessing, and further evidence of God's providence. This is a refreshing word for our times.
In recent years, clergy burnout has been a key issue in effective pastoral leadership. Many pastors find it difficult to balance their time and inner resources to meet the ever-pressing needs of parish and community. Administrator, teacher, counselor, priest, preacher, consultant, and all-around good guy --expectations of the pastor are very high, from the pastor as well as those the pastor serves. Add, to this over-zealousness, the guilt that ensues when one discovers one's inability to do it all. The stress mounts. Although most denominations are so structured that some responsibilities are delegated, most pastors jealously guard their position as "top dog," and the stress mounts ...
We do well to remember Moses' sober admission that the burden of the people was too much for him; and to pray for and seek out those who may share the burden --rejoicing that God raises up laborers for the vineyard.
