Most M.Div. programs expect prospective students to have a "sense of call." Just what constitutes such a calling is defined in various ways, but it includes the belief that God has a specific ministry for the person to do.
Eden Theological Seminary lists the following qualification: That he/she has an emerging sense of call to ministry through a process of sustained reflection about personal gifts and vocational options. A call to ministry is understood by Eden to be a personal sense of call that is affirmed and nurtured by a community of faith that recognizes one as gifted for ministry.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America offers seven essential qualities of rostered leaders, one of which is a sense of call. Under that heading they list the following attributes: Flexibility; Understanding; Clear, Inner and Outer Senses of Call; Desire to Learn, As a Way of Life; Sense of Mission; Curiosity; Life-long Learner; Sense of Transformation; Sense of Re-formation; Teachability; Open to Change and Self-discovery; Listener.
