Most of my sermons are Gospel-oriented, written to encourage people to get in touch with what and how they are feeling so that they can continue to grow in faith toward God and in love toward themselves and others. However, every now and again I preach a sermon that my older members call a "fire and brimstone" message.
After one such message, I walked down the aisle, singing the last verse of the closing hymn, and I thought to myself, "I wonder if anyone will comment on today's 'fire and brimstone' sermon?" I didn't have to wait long to find out.
Al was the first person out of church. As he shook my hand he said, "Pastor, that was a fine 'fire and brimstone' sermon. You're right. Too many people judge others before they look at how they live their own life, and they don't listen to the Holy Spirit's guidance. It's too bad Charlie wasn't here to hear it. He's always telling me that I'm wrong. He really needs to listen to something like this."
