For most people living in North America, "rejoicing always" is a relatively easy thing to do. John Huss didn't have it quite so easy. Born in 1380 in Hussinetz, Huss received a bachelor of divinity in 1408 and became a pastor in Prague. It was about this time that the reforming work of Wycliffe found its way into Prague. Huss received the teaching with zeal and began to preach them contrary to the wishes of the church. He soon found himself before Cardinal Colonna on charges of heresy. Several times Huss appeared before the official council to answer the charges. Huss refused to change his teachings. His last appearance before the council was on July 4, 1414. As before, Huss stood steadfast and refused to recant. On July 6, he was led out to be burned alive. Foxe's Book of Martyrs reports, "As soon as the fagots were lighted, the martyr sang a hymn, with so cheerful a voice, that he was heard above the crackling of the fire and the noise of the multitude."
Huss' was an extreme example of rejoicing in the Lord always.
