Most students, at one time...

Most students, at one time or another, are given a "test" in which the instructions are
something like this: "Before answering any questions, read through the entire test." What
follows is a series of intricate math, logic, and other questions and problems. The final
question, however says: "Do not answer any of the questions on this test. Write your
name at the top of the paper and turn it in."
Of course, the majority of the students start answering all of the questions without reading through the entire test. They are a bit frantic when, after a relatively short time, the teacher asks everyone to put down their pencils and turn in the test.
I think the writer of Proverbs must have felt like the teacher at times ... "since they hated knowledge ... since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways ..." (1:29-31).
