Most of us have heard...

Most of us have heard of the pogroms in Russia - Jews would be attacked in their homes, especially at Christmas and Easter time, and be forced to run for their lives. "Get the filthy Christ-killers!" would ring in their ears.
There was inevitably some hostility between the early Christians and the other children of Israel, but this story in Acts pictures the positive way in which to deal with conflicts of this nature. These early Christians do not say "Lord, look upon their threats and smash these enemies to pieces." Rather, they say, "Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness ..."
The differences between the religions of the world call for dialogue, for words of love and understanding (the kind of words that God would have us learn), not for deeds of anger. Speaking God's Word with boldness means haying the strength to love. It does not mean that we should condemn others or browbeat them into accepting our own point of view.
Christmas and Easter did not happen in order to encourage us to attack people! Our calling is to share our faith in deeds and dialogue. If anyone is converted, that is God's business, not ours.
