Mothers teach children that "people pay more attention to what we do than what we say." Believers might phrase it another way: "If we say we are Christians with our mouths, then we have to act like Christians." So it is in love and faith. As Christians, God calls us to be good examples in the world. If we hurt badly in love, we must persevere to serve others with joy even when it is difficult.
When we say we are Christians, others watch us carefully. At a wedding each guest observes the bride and groom to see if they look happy on their wedding day. Is she smiling? Does he look ready to get married? At a time when two people are probably scared to death, the others watching are looking for joyful looks.
John Calvin loved verse 12 in this passage. Paul instructs his followers that there is ambiguity in our lives. He compares it to looking into a mirror and seeing a clear reflection of ourselves. Our God promises us a great future -- in faith, hope, and love -- but there may be a slight delay in figuring it all out.
